SPCOM204 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Spoken Language, Facial Expression, Body Language
Document Summary
One way of describing communication: sender determines meaning and content, and passes it (like a gift) to receivers, who then possess it. Game of catch: sending and receiving messages: taking turns (as would seem to be taking place in conversation). Participants in communication are each formulating and sending messages (verbal and non-verbal), simultaneously receiving and understanding messages. Process of sending and receiving is simultaneous (not one, then the other). Lots going on at once in face-to-face communication. Problems in e-mail and text messages: limited information therefore limited understanding, especially in relational content. Your subjective description of who you think you are it is filtered through your own perceptions. The labels that we use to describe ourselves, reflected in our attitudes, beliefs, and values: ie. i am smart, foolish, tall, a student, an athlete etc. Our self-concepts are often different from the way others see us. We may behave differently in private and public.
