FILM100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Diegesis, Smoke Signal, Traffic Reporting
Document Summary
Narrative is one of the most challenging topic we"ll discuss. A chain of events in cause effect relationship occurring in time and space. Sometimes still images can represent moments that imply something may have happened or will. Character is usually defined by a collective traits physical and psychological. We always make assumptions about a character, try and understand them. Story represents physical world (diegesis just means physical world). Inferred events are apart of the story, which are events not shown in the film. Events the spectator must assume happened, like you don"t start the movie when the character was born, that would take to long watch all. You can some up things with a few words. So viewers must create a fictional world based on what you learn in the film. (also has explicit events) Brief shots that are inserted to make a point but don"t affect the world (diegetic inserts)
