Characteristics of emerging adulthood, cultural & historical factors. Emerging adulthood = starts by high school and ends by the last twenties. Different between cultures, western are more individualistic, whereas, Up and down nature of emerging adulthood & impact of progression and backslides. Adjustment is essential - romance and nancial status is often up and down. Can lead to distress - aware that it is normal. Historical, gender and cultural changes in leaving home. Average age at leaving home = 25years - has increased over the last decade. Gender (males stay home longer than females) Cultural and regional in uences (ses status, education and employment) - Erikson"s emerging adult stage (identity vs role confusion) & Identity confusion = failure in identity formation, marked by the lack of any sense of a future adult path. Marcia four different identity statuses towards being adults: Identity diffusion = where the person is aimless or feels totally blocked, without any adult life path.
