Document Summary

September 25 the waorani of lowland ecuador, natural. Joseph conrad wrote that the jungle was less a forest than a primeval mob, a remnant of an ancient era when vegetation rioted and consumed the earth. He referred to a time when the amazonian rainforests stood immense, inviolable, a mantle of green stretching across an entire continent. In many parts of the amazon the clouds are of smoke, the scents are of grease and lube oil, and the sounds one hears are of machinery. But the amazon is vast and happily much of it remains untouched and protected, despite all the deforestation along the periphery of the basin. It is the largest forest on the planet; in scale the size of the entire continental us, or more poetically put, the size of the face of the full moon. The river itself is 4200 miles long, the longest on earth. Within the basin are 20 rivers larger than the rhine.
