Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
January 4th, 2012
Introduction: A World Divided
“An old idea: the ruler as the embodiment of society”
Why the Pope’s decision made a difference?
No longer “one” world = divided
- Pope Alexander divided the world for Spain and Portugal. Where he divided,
those reigning powers were allowed to exploit people and the resources found
there.
Anthropology is the holistic study of humans through time and space
People are forced to acknowledge differences culturally begin to question human
moral natures (Ex. John Lock)
Due to the Pope’s decision: in today’s modern world we can see human diversity =
cultural anthropology
