Document Summary

1989 international labour organisation convention 169: deined global starting points that were up for discussion, written in a paternalistic form, brought indigenous people into global conversation. 1993 global year of indigenous peoples: promoted by the un that people of the world should take a hard look at cultural realities of their indigenous peoples. 2007 un declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples: smaller wing of the un that focused on work life and the livelihood of people, this declaration tried to expand that. The notion that within certain territories, those that were there irst should be able to have say in what happens to it: stops short of sovereignty. Being sovereign of reserves does not mean they are actually. In contexts of settler colonialism, it may seem pretty clear who was there irst.
