We can never understand addiction as something that is simply medical and can not be something that goes in the dsm. Historians believe it"s because modernity was a huge social upheaval. Demons have been part of every culture we can think about. Most prominent in the modern age (the last 500 years), paradoxical because this is also the time of technology like space travel and computers. Demonology and witchcraft gradually began to translate into medical terms in the terms of drugs and such. People began to speak of alcohol like they used to talk about demons. Demon thinking recreates itself medically and scientifically. Demon possession and it"s understanding is very relatable to drug addiction and especially with the fentanyl crisis happening today. Fentanyl comes from a company in the states, building a wall along mexico won"t do anything, and worrying about it coming from china isn"t doing much either.
