Human meaning is generated through symbols, such as particular wods or things. Not all symbols are equal or do the same work. A key symbol , such as the yin-yang figure, serves to organize or summarize whose fields of meaning: food is a key symbol defining the boundaries between edible and inedible and much else in many cultures. Food does biological service but is (for humans) a cultural category: it has to be learned. In many instances, not-foods can be made into foods and vice-versa- adding additional layers of meaning: raw cassava = not food, cassava flat bread = food.
