We are what we eat. food is essential to our biological survival, yet there are few aspects of human life that are as culturally varied and elaborated as food getting, consumption and symbolism. In this course, we will survey anthropological contributions to the study of food particularly as related to modes of social organization and cultural systems of meaning. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to. Trace the influences of food in human biological and cultural evolution. Locate and assess interdisciplinary scholarly sources on the origins, development and social impacts of individual foods and cuisines. Prepare concise and accessible reports on scholarly and popular sources relevant to understanding the history and cultural significance of particular foods and cuisines. Assess the historical and cultural impacts of various foods within particular cultural traditions and globally.
