Document Summary
Explain how rapid prototyping technologies are used in the design process. Describe how each of the following rapid prototyping technologies works, as well as the associates strengths and weaknesses: waterjet cutter, laser cutter, 3d printer. Uses: cutting through almost any material. Drawbacks: most water jet cutter leave it straight down thus it is only 2d. Limitations: almost impossible to control depth, it is a straight through cut, materials will get wet. Limitations: requires more power to cut through metal, restricted to cutting flat shapes, some materials produce gas or particulates. Plastic is melted and deposited in shaped strips. Uses lasers to fuse with a laser into a layer. Advantages: you can make 3d objects that are incredibly complex, take files directly from cad to physical objects. Limitations: slow (cid:373)a(cid:272)hi(cid:374)es, (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t (cid:272)o(cid:373)pete with others i(cid:374) speed, type of materials are limited to whatever can be used in layer by layer technique.
