APSC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Systems Theory, Life-Cycle Assessment, Impact Assessment
Document Summary
Remember that sustainability should be considered right from the start of the project. Challenges for water treatment in small & remote locations: Economy of scales, more expensive in remote locations. Centralized systems are often found in large cities. A small number of water treatment plants produce drinking water and then transport to locations within the city. Same applies for waste water systems, water sewage sends water to large treatment plants. Easier to operate a single centralized system and manage water treatment process. Infrastructure needed - large amounts of piping, expensive and time costly to build and maintain. Difficult to adjust the capacity of system, not flexible for city growth. Greater number of smaller plants serve a section of the city, but in that section it is still locally centralized (semi- decentralized) Systems can be further decentralized to entirely one building (fully decentralized), this is called point of entry system. To each business or home is called point of use system.
