Document Summary

Psychological disorders are incurable: majority of mental illnesses people become functioning citizens, many can be cured and some may not even need therapy to do so. People with psychological disorders are violent and dangerous: more likely to be victims not perpetrators, drugs and alcohol make everyone more likely to be violent. Medieval times: a demonic model: believed that they were possessed, subject to torture, exorcisms. Late 1800s: moral treatement: dorethea dix, hould(cid:374)"t treat the(cid:373) like a(cid:374)i(cid:373)als, still believing it as a medical issue, they were free from cages, but still no treatment. Medicalization of abnormality: today, in psychology and psychiatry, abnormal behaviour is diagnosed and (increasingly) treated like any other medical disorder. This medicalization of abnormality poses a number of problems for the individual: the individual is told they are ill. This justifies their behaviour to themselves and to others.
