Document Summary

Urea has 8 hydrogen binding opportuniies competes with the hydrogen bonds between the bases it. Dmso has 2 methyl groups (hydrophobic) and the s=o (hydrophilic) it is detergent = hydrophobic interacions destabilizes dna because it reduces the hydrophobic efect. Polyamine would be protonated in soluion = 4 posiive charges shields the negaive charge of the phosphates - stabilizes dna. There are 3 forms if dna whose structures have been solved: a, b, and z: b form: The 2 grooves are coninuous up the dna like a screw. Base pairs are perpendicular to the axis of the dna. Rotaions about this bond lead to syn- and ant-conformaions of the base with respect to the pentose ring. Pyrimidines can only exist in the ani conformaion : the keto cannot face inwards. Limited rotaions about this bond due to the preferenial endo conformaion.
