Document Summary

Biol112 - lecture #15- organization of genetic info. Genes- stretches of dna that codes for proteins. Genome contains other things that act as the instruction manual for making proteins. Genome data of some species-comparison chart (don"t need to memorize, more for comparison, to show humans aren"t the centre of everything) Genome size does not determine number of genes. Genes can be very long, contain many non-coding regions. Or very short with few non-coding regions. So you cannot predict number of genes based on the genome size. I. e. rice- has a smaller genome than humans, but larger amount of genes. Genome size is easier- can do based on weight of the base pairs. But finding the gene number can be very difficult. I. e. with the lung fish- so many base pairs but have to go through and determine which are coding regions and are functional. Further comparison of base pairs and number of genes.
