BIOL 412 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Intertropical Convergence Zone, Quercus Garryana, California Oak Woodland
Document Summary
Biome: a major classification of natural vegetation that occurs wherever a particular set of climatic and soil conditions prevail. Net primary productivity (npp): rate of formation of plant tissue in an ecological community that represents the rate of energy made available to herbivores. Bog (mire) : peatland that receives much of it water from precipitation and is characterized by water that is low in nutrients and is acidic: bogs are often covered with a matt of sphagnum moss. Fen (fenland) : peatland that receives much of it water from runoff and groundwater: fens have higher nutrient levels and support more diverse plant and animal community than bogs. Estuary : body of water where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the sea. Salt marsh : wetland dominated by herbaceous vegetation and characterized by its relatively high salinity and salt adapted inhabitants.
