Document Summary

Lesson 1: complexity science - theory and observations. Complexity science: essentially the study of complex systems (systems which are thought to not having any set behavior but rather operate by developing upon one another - leading to collective behavior), there are 3 collective properties. Complex collective behavior --> essentially all the components are working collectively at a hard to determine manner, making it a complex system. Signaling and information processing --> all complex systems use signaling and produce information from internal and external environments. Adaptation --> systems change their behavior and adapt through evolutionary processes. The hard to predict behavior that is developed from complex systems is called emergent. Resiliency: essentially when we create systems around us that are becoming more vulnerable to collapse, making us much more vulnerable. Thus it is critical we become more resilient to collapse (e. g. technological/economical collapses, nation collapses) We need to work on this collectively as a country, nation, community and species.
