MOST IMPORTANT -> WHAT TYPE OF DATA DO YOU HAVE?
Categorical- named categories or “bins” that cases fall into
Quantitative (or measurement)- measured numerical values with some underlying metric or scale and usually
but not always has units
Sometimes it’s obvious what type of data you have; sometimes it isn’t.
Identifier – unique to 1 case (e.g. student #, SIN)
neither categorical or quantitative
String variables- have to be converted to mean something (e.g. data,
• summarized by counts or frequencies
• can be subdivided into 3 categories:
1. binary- 2 name categories
o everything 0 or 1, easiest data to collect
o e.g. male/female, pass/fail, Mac/PC, yes/no, true/false
2. nominal- 2 or more named (unordered) categor
