Conflict - a process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively affected, or is about to negatively affect, something that the first party cares about. Functional conflict - conflict that supports the goals of the group and improves its performance: cognitive conflict - conflict that is task-oriented and related to differences in perspectives and judgements. Dysfunctional conflict - conflict that hinders group performance: affective conflict - conflict that is emotional and aimed at a person rather than an issue. Three general categories: communication y the potential for conflict increases when too little/much communication takes place y channel chosen for communicating influence and stimulate opposition, structure y y. Structural, such as sales department and production department clash. Structural variables that can lead to conflict: size, specialization and composition, greater the ambiguity in responsibility, reward systems are inequitable, leadership style: too much control, the diversity of goals.
