Chapter 5: motivation in action (only job characteristics model) Job characteristics model (jcm): a model that identifies five core job dimensions and their relationship to personal and work outcomes. Job enrichment: an application of the jcm, refers to the vertical expansion of jobs. It increases the degree to which which workers control the planning, execution, and evaluation of their work: expands employees" freedom and independence, increases responsibility, provides feedback, so individuals will be able to assess and correct their own performance. Communication: the transfer and understanding of a message between two or more people. Communication is a foundation for may things that happen among groups and within the workplace: motivation, providing information, controlling behaviour, expressing emotion. Sender: establishes a message, encodes the message, and chooses the chanel to send it. Receiver: decodes the message and provides feedback to the sender. Encoding: converting a message to symbolic form. Channel: the medium through which a message travels.
