Document Summary

Environmental change is broken up into 3 categories: cyclical, abrupt, and gradual. 3 types of changes we monitor: cyclical: something that occurs on a cycle i. e. migration, abrupt: something that is quickly changed. i. e fire. going from forest state to a non-forest state, gradual: gradual change i. e. climate change. Forestry/environmental planning i. e. we must understand how the land is changing in order to monitor it. First, we must answer the question: what is the type of change we are looking at? i. e. if we are locating individual trees, we need the right pixel size. Let"s say that we are talking about vegetation. We would want to find the portions of the em spectrum that will be able to tell us about the change in vegetaion. Visible range, near-infrared range will help us here. Overall whatever change we want to monitor, we should know where in the em we need to monitor: frequency of our revisit.
