Chapter book/ early reader- kids just starting out to read, very controlled books are kids are learning to read. Young adult (ya)- anything from 13-14 up to 17-18 years old. New adult (na)- characters who are out in the world alone 19-20"s year old, engaging in slightly more mature life. Adult- basically all other books for other ages. the vocabulary changes, and the language. Craft considerations character ages mid-grade (readers 8-13) - still taking vocabulary levels into account. Few outright works of tragedy for this age group. Length of book the adult reader is assumed to be 18 and up. The ambivalent or tragic ending is completely acceptable. Characters can be any age, but the idea of the "adult gaze" is ever-present.
