Document Summary

The effects of it can be long lasting and costly. It can take lives and damage infrastructure and trigger secondary disasters that are difficult to deal with: socio-economic impact. Throughout the world, valleys and mountainous regions have experiences a quick economic development in response to the growing population. Vulnerability to landslides is increased by: increasing population density, use of marginal land, rapid land-use change, global warming. Devastating landslide disasters typically involve numerous fatalities due to both direct and indirect consequences: effects of gravity. Mass movement, sometimes also referred to as mass wasting, refers to the downslope motion of soil and/or rock materials under the influence of gravity. Landslide is the general term to mass movements, and gravity is the main force responsible for landslides: on a flat surface, the force of gravity acts downward. Thus, any object on a flat surface remains as is and will not move due to the force of gravity.
