Lighting strikes up and down and into thin air. Sometimes sail in strong wind and take bizarre paths through the light: tall man made structures trigger this. Most occur in the clouds and never strike the earth. Intra cloud lightning: air to cloud lightning. Lightning has a mind of its own and often takes random paths. Stepped leader: meets with upward leader, and causes the lightning strike, multiple upward streamers reach out.
