EOSC 114 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Megathrust Earthquake, Waves, Energy
Document Summary
Outline: tsunami generation and behaviour, we can be safe from tsunami, how to survive a tsunami. The first wave may not be the biggest - the trough may arrive first. Tsunamis mostly occur in the ring of fire, and are caused by earthquakes for the most part. Not just any earthquake causes a tsunami. It has to be the right kind of earthquake. One plate moves over or under another, in a vertical motion. Tsunami is possible if the seafloor ruptures or breaks. If two plates slide past each other, and there"s no vertical motion, a tsunami is unlikely. Ideal setting for tsunami generation (locations): japan, alaska, chile, indonesia, and cascadia. Computer simulations of tsunami wave travel times and heights are based off the data of: arrival times in japan, run-up distances. Deep ocean assessment and reporting of tsunami. Measures pressure changes on seafloor caused by tsunami. Head for high ground and stay there.
