Module a: the nature of science, key geological concepts. Scienti c method: science = a method of observing and attempting to interpret the physical universe. Every event has a physical explanation: process of scienti c investigation: Lithosphere = continental and oceanic crust; the uppermost part of the mantle. Continental crust = rich in silica (si); oceanic crust = iron (fe) Asthenosphere the upper mantle material; relatively soft, lubricating. Mantle hot, viscous; convection currents (hot mantle material rising from the depth and cooler upper mantle material sinking) > motion of the lithospheric plates. Inner core a solid with a metallic composition. How the plates and the continents are pushed and pulled around the surface of the earth. The earth"s surface = a fractured eggshell: types of plate boundaries. Geological activity: plate formation, earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain building. Tectonic plates move away from each other > new crust is constructed.
