January 30, 2013: earth is ancient, earth has changed a lot through time. Scientists also started to suspect it was not just the landscape that had changed life (the biosophere) had too! Ex: george cuvier (1800s) - mammoth remains in europe. Concludes: mammoths were once living species that have become extinct. To allow all of this change to happen earth had to be very old. Started to divide time into specific divisions based mostly on the different tpes of fossils they contained. Many of these divisions based on large extinction events. Look at the precambrian compare to phanerozoic.
