So what is (cid:858)ethical(cid:859: documentary ethics are predominately descriptive or situational, highly contextual, dependent on an independent, rational decision maker, difficulty in defining principles of practice. Situationism: reflective of the case by case, context specific realities of documentary production. Professional vs personal: balancing a responsibility to audiences and the responsibility to subjects, the greater societal good. Informed consent: permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences (for example, that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits)
