We cant escape it, we dont question it, as we assume it to be natural. People get too emotionally engages and connected to the film, so hes trying to pull them away to show that this has been constructed and put in front of them in a way to lure in the viewers. You need to step outside the realm of the film in order to truly see it for what it is and critically view it. Distancing and alienation techniques breaking the fourth wall. Setting us up with this idea of what we are watching, as to construct us to what we are watching. Forcing us to think about the differences between the actor and the character, that they are similar in ways but also different in ways.
