Document Summary

Geob 102 - our changing environment: climate and ecosystem - lecture 14: weather. Monsoon: system of low-level winds blowing into a continent in summer and out of it in winter, controlled by atmospheric pressure systems developed seasonally over the continent. Found in southeast asia, africa, australia and north america. Small, very intense wind vortex with extremely low air pressure at its center, generally formed beneath a dense cumulonimbus cloud in proximity to a cold front. In north america, they peak at spring and early summer. Cold dry over warm moist air (inversion fueled by the jet stream) lead to instability that creates strong convergence and thunderstorms. Keys to climate: latitude: higher temperatures near the equator, coastal - continental location: smaller annual ranges in coastal locations, warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. Temperature regime: patterns of mean monthly temperatures observed at stations around the world: equatorial, tropical, mid-latitude, subarctic, polar.
