Taxonomy: sub discipline of biology concerned with classification and naming of organisms. Taxa (singular = taxon): groups used for classifications. Species: group of individuals that are morphologically similar and can interbreed freely under natural conditions, producing fertile offspring. Liger: panthera leo (m) x panthera tigris (f) Tigon: panthera leo (f) x panthera tigris (m) Population: all individuals of a given species in a prescribed area. Community: group of populations of organisms that live and interact in a prescribed area. Ecosystem: all of the interacting biological and physical components of a prescribed area. Biome: very large areas of the earth"s surface that have similar climate and vegetation. Sources: global climate, microclimate (light, temperature, moisture, others), soils.
