Types of volcanoes
How & why rocks melt
How does magma generation relate to plate tectonics
Why are there different types of volcanoes and volcanic eruptions
What hazards do volcanoes present
Volcano: Hills, ridges, mountains formed by accumulation of lava flows and pyroclastic flows that deposit
around the conduit or center depression from which volcanoes erupted.
Shape of the conduit
Types of eruption
Types (Slide 43)
1. Cinder volcano – Small, pyroclastic flows
2. Shield volcano – (smallgiant) thing layers of lava flows
4.Dome complexes – rhyolitic composition
How & Why rocks melt (slide 52)
Melting temp. depends on the minerals
Temp is affected by: Pressure, and water.
There is a linear relationship between pressure and melting temp. for each particular mineral.
A mixture of minerals in the rock causes the rock to melt at lower temp.
