The idea of the nation-state: 19th-20th century idea: Not regarded as permanent by (neo)liberals, marxists or modernization theory but nationalism is becoming more prominent: western europe. Eta = euskadi ta askatasuna: formerly armed leftist basque nationalist & separatist organization in the basque country, since 1957, regional parliament: 1975, struggle finally over in 2011. Basque country: northern spain, southwestern france, autonomous community, strong cultural traditions, riverside city of bilbao = architecture. & design: protecting old language and culture in remote area, ruthlessly erased under fascist government, picasso"s guernica painting of bombing.
