GEOG 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Library Of Alexandria, Big Data, System Administrator
Document Summary
A byte is a size of a memory that is needed to encode a single character within a computer"s architecture. Large amounts of data have existed for a long period of time > first censuses go back to ancient egypt. The first "avalanche" of numbers: produced about 200 years ago (associated with the early 19th century) > along with the formalization of the states/bureaucracies > lead to hacking. Alexandrian library: first academic library which contained everything that the ancient world knew about itself and the world > now there is 1. 5 trillion times more information (as measured by bytes) that is stored in the library. Big data also need fast data processing (not just about the amount of data) > relates to hardware. Cpu: central processing unit > there is competition to produce the fastest cpu (a device where commands can be calculated through mathematic problems) Our current world of big data: increasing data size + the speed of processing.
