Over a billion of people around the world live in slums. More people live in cities than countries, has been a reality since the 90s. In 2008 for the first time in the world there was as many people living in cities as in rural areas. In global north more people living in cities since early 20th century (in canada since 1931; 2011 > In global south, slower process: latin america and se asia, s and e asia(china 53% urbanized, slower in sub saharan africa (although lagos, nigeria, 17m) In 1975, 21 cities: more than 5 million, by 2003: 26 cities, 2014:71, 2030: 104. 1975, the largest cities in the world split between global north and global south. 2014: split is 3 to 1 in favor of global south. Growth rates pick up in the global south(1960s onwards: 5 1/2 % until 1980s. Not classical industrialization: mechanism that was thought to be operated in global north.
