Document Summary

Influence on forest dynamics: autogenic process: internal ecosystem processes(e. g growth, competition) that result in a change in species that occupy a site. Things that are happening with some regularity through time: disturbance: event that kills or damages individuals and creates opportunities for others to grow and reproduce. What factors causes disturbances: physical processes(fire, wind etc, biotic processes(insect infestation, human impact, are disturbances natural. We need to know whether species can cope with this change. Natural disturbance agents: fire, wind, diseases, insects, ice and snow, flood, landslide. Natural disturbances important parameters: return interval/frequency: average time between incidences of disturbances. Wide range of frequencies, depending on where you are: intensity/severity: quantify amount of vegetation that"s killed or degree of disturbance, spatial pattern: size and distribution of disturbances across a landscape. Understory re-initiation phrase: trees growing from underneath the canopy. Old growth phrase: lots of different aged trees, many species required.
