New empires: japan and the united states (1890-1914) Japan and the us were late industrializers and late colonial powers industrialized later in the 19th century compared to the uk which began much earlier. Location of their empires differed from the empires of the european big powers. British+french had very large territories/colonies in africa along with the rest of the world. Us+jap were more interested in their region. Expansion of japanese empire was very much tied to qing dynasty (1644-1911), choson. Endpoints of both are related to expansion of jap power. The caribbean and latin america and the pacific; especially the philippines. Philippines became a colony of us around the same time as cuba. Protectorate - independent internal affairs, limited sovereignty, big power rules through the indigenous ruling/political class. Colony - very limited autonomy, all decisions about gov+economics are made by the colonial power.
