Location of their empires differed from the empires of the european big powers. British+french had very large territories/colonies in africa along with the rest of the world. Us+jap were more interested in their region. Expansion of japanese empire was very much tied to qing dynasty (1644-1911), choson. Endpoints of both are related to expansion of jap power. The caribbean and latin america and the pacific; especially the philippines. Philippines became a colony of us around the same time as cuba. Protectorate - independent internal affairs, limited sovereignty, big power rules through the indigenous ruling/political class. Colony - very limited autonomy, all decisions about gov+economics are made by the colonial power.
