So industrialization ushered in an era of unprecedented material abundance and prosperity. However that prosperity was very unevenly divided, across society. There was a fundamental reordering of the way things were produced. In pre-industrial society, production was scattered and dispersed in small artisan workshops. And in the very often, people"s homes. Now, production and with it, work, becomes concentrated in large factories that employ dozens, and hundreds and sometimes even thousands! W/in those factories, work became increasingly divided, and became increasingly specialized. In the past, an artisan would produce an entire pair of shoes from start to finish. Now, his/her work was replaced with an assembly line, whereby each worker would become responsible for only 1 small part of that production process of a pair of shoes. Work became much more routine, predictable, boring .
