Détente:ARealization for Global Peace
The period in the 1960s witnessed the conflicts of East-West Germany and West
Germany with its eastern neighbor. The main reason for this conflict was due to the failure to
achieve a mutual understanding with one another. The lack of cooperation between nations has a
profound effect on the effort of achieving global peace as such it halted the progress of achieving
détente. However, in the late 1960s, German leaders under the leadership of Willy Brandt and
Bonn initiated aggressive efforts to ensure the success of global peace. The significance of their
effort will be discussed at the end of this essay.
Willy Brandt, West Germany’s Social Democratic Leader envisioned West Germany as a
nation that is able to maintain good relationships with its counterparts and this includes the
Soviet Union. Under his leadership, the progress towards détente was accelerated through his
flexible fiscal policy. Flexibility in fiscal policy in this context refers to Brandt’s desire to pursue
global peace “even if that mean renouncing the cherished goals of national unification and
recovery of the lost territories” (Keylor 260).
Together with Bonn’s effort to achieve global peace, the cooperation between European
increases. The period of détente can be characterized by the increasing effort in key areas such as
economy and the nations’efforts to reduce the size of military. In terms of economy, West
Germany and the Communist bloc managed establish a bilateral agreement whereby this
relationship will benefit them through possible channels such as trade relationship (Keylor 262).
In relation to the actions of reducing the size of military, such a move was necessary as to
facilitate the effort of global peace.
