Technology and Medical Diagnosis -diagnosis -beginning the relationship between the physician and the patient -defines what course of action will follow -technology as a diagnostic tool -promoted the rise of specialization within medicine -made medicine part of the society -represents alienation between patient and doctor -developing era, physics, in the 17th century ▯ -didn’t touch medicine too strongly -physician relied on ▯ -patient’s description of symptoms ▯ -their appearance and behaviour ▯ -rarely, the doctor’s manual examination -in 19th century, symptom was the subjective feeling that the patient experienced -the signs were the things that the doctor could notice -symptoms could be described in vague ways, patients may not report accurately, or may lie -began thinking of disease not in humoral ways, but the anatomical ways -Andreas Vesalius gave anatomical lectures -the in spirit of the renaissance, people were becoming more aware of their own bodies -people began dissecting corpses and compare them with ancient text, by gaelin (sp?) ▯ -began to realize that their old ideas were wrong -started off by correcting gaelin, then adding what they were finding -detailed discussion of what was being found -by 18th century, people were becoming more interested in the connection between anatomy and disease ▯ -discovered lesions in the body after death, in some cases it was obvious that ▯ these lesions had to do with the death -Reve Laennec published a book called Auscultation -expansion of public hospitals occurred -hippocrates had already laid out how you listen to the chest to hear if there’s fluid ▯ -but this hadn’t been verified with autopsies -used rolled up paper to better listen to the chest -later turned this into a more advanced device ▯ -called a ‘cylinder’ because of the sh
