Layard was the rst to excavate the north-west palace at nimrud. Behistun was the key to deciphering cuneiform. Room in the palaces of sennacherib and ashurbanipal at nineveh lled with broken clay tablets. The flood tablet is tablet xi from the gilgamesh epic. Very similar to the book of genesis. Ashurbanipal - the last great assyrian king. Nineveh and its remains by layard was a best seller. Another british excavation team went to nimrud in the 1950"s. Led by max mallowan, who was married to agatha christie (detective novelist). Both african and syrian elephants, and hippo teeth. When the palace was invaded, the looters provably tore o the gold and jewels and threw the ivories into the well. Iraqi team in the 1980"s did more investigating. Baked tile oor was buckling - they investigated underneath. Found tombs (wife & sister of sargon ii) underneath.
