Document Summary

In this section, we will investigate a particularly troublesome (and frequently discussed) issue from the realm of international business ethics, namely the problem of bribery. By the end of this part of the module, you should be able to: outline several major moral arguments against bribery, relate the problem of bribery to the notion of "loyal agency" discussed in module 4. Please read this commentary before the assigned readings. This section will give you a general introduction to the ethical issues involved when corporations consider engaging in bribery in other countries. Bribery is the act of influencing an agent"s decision by offering a gift. The agent in question may be a government official, or perhaps a manager at another company. Defining bribery precisely is difficult, in part because of the range of activities that might be called bribery, or at least related. In north america, we give small cash payments ("tips") to waiters and waitresses.
