PHIL 434 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility
Document Summary
If we could expect scenarios from daily life such as being treated fairly, not infringing rights, etc. , we could expect the same thing from business in our community. Business is an artificial construct made by people, therefore it could literally be changed overnight, hence it is appropriate to have high moral expectations for business. If a corporate executive uses company money to support charitable cause, then that executive is in effect stealing money from the company"s shareholders. There is a difference between business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility is used to describe a high moral ideal with regard to the corporation"s behavior as it affects the larger community: idea that corporations should do more that just following moral rules such as: Being a leader on issues of human rights.
