Document Summary

Homocysteinuria urinating increased levels of homocysteine (hcy) The (cid:862)ho(cid:373)o(cid:272)(cid:455)stei(cid:374)e h(cid:455)pothesis(cid:863) = i(cid:374)(cid:272)reased plas(cid:373)a hcy is asso(cid:272)iated (cid:449)ith graded i(cid:374)(cid:272)reased risk of mi, angina, cad, stroke, pvd, ish, carotid occlusion, mortality, depression. Independent of tc, ldl, hdl, diabetes, smoking, bmi, age, bp. There is a strong correlation between increased hcy and increased cv risk (stenosis, vascular disease) Ma showed that hcy is a marker/risk factor for the cause of vascular events. Showed that giving folate + b12 + b6 after an acute coronary event increased the survival rate. This study changed protocol, and everyone got these vitamins after a coronary event. B vitamins had no effect on recurring coronary events. Giving folic acid, b6, and b12 did lower hcy levels, and you could get their b vitamin levels up. But this had no effect on cardiovascular events. These studies all showed that the vitamins have no effect on preventing cv events/stroke.
