POLI 360 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Filkins
Document Summary
Need three things: people, resources & crucially, territory. Filkins talks primarily about the war in afghanistan & iraq + what caused them. Using the above structure we can see that both cases align. In afghanistan, after the soviet withdrawal from the country, it was largely chaotic and violent. Different militia/insurgent groups fought for control over the cities. Warlords controlled these groups and the country was divided into regions. Fundamental religious people bounded together as the taliban, and took back the country (mostly) They did this by making violent examples (hanging people off of their tanks/jeeps) > they brought more order but at the cost of extremist religious suppression. > this order was short lived however, because the state is still not able to able to regain control. > the invasion"s purpose was to overthrow saddam, but the unintended. Filkins starts out talking about the us invasion of iraq as a destabilizer.
