Document Summary

Meridians 15 degrees apart, one hour separates adjacent time zones. Solar noon- when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, approx. Arctic circle, in winter, sun gets as high as it gets (not necessarily directly overhead) Time zones extended to make things easier for residents in the same countries/provinces etc. Coordinated universal time (utc)- time along the prime meridian everyone follows one system: time that utc expresses are kept close to the mean solar time at the earth"s prime meridian (zero degrees longitude) Greenwich mean time (gmt) somewhat synonymous to utc. Time springs forward an hour in spring, falls back an hour in november. Many projections exaggerate size of the higher latitudes, making northern continents appear bigger than they are. Mercator (cylindrical) -true shape and direction, distorted area advantage: straight lines navigation. Navigation: fastest route is not a straight line on a flat map. Shortest distance between two points on a sphere is the arc great circle.
