Document Summary

Who can legitimately exert physical force: the state claims to be the one, according to weber"s definition. This week we are going to focus on two concepts that intervene in shaping when we deem the use of physical force legitimate : nationality and ideology. We, as a society, have the right to decide how to govern ourselves, what kind of political institutions to establish, and who should be our leaders. Note: this is not yet about democracy but rather about a concern about foreign interference in political matters. The idea of self-determination is related to the principle of sovereignty. But the issue is a bit more complicated: not just the fact that we are as a society decide how we are going to govern ourselves, not always clear about who is part of the we". Some people will claim that they are a different collectivity who will have their own right of self-determination while others deny that.
