Realism - most influential ir theory, has attracted fierce criticism. Is still, particularly in north america, an influential theory. It had to change the thought process of international relations. Think about how you"re gonna view this world, as a leader. Realist prescriptions - well suited to america"s rise to become a global hegemon (or leader) taught us leaders to focus on interests rather than ideology, powers can coexist even if they have opposing beliefs. Study the continuities between today, and the past. Core elements of realism: the state is the key actor, representative of the collective will. What is the national interest how is it implemented how is it created.
