Psych 101, November 19, 2012 Variations in Consciousness, Part 3 Stages of Sleep About every 90 minutes, we pass through a cycle of five distinct sleep stages Awake, Beta Drowsy, Alpha Stage 1, Theta waves Stage2, Delta Waves and sleep spindles Stage3/stage 4, Delta – deep sleep REM, Beta/REM Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta, Beta/REM (15-30cycles/sec) (9-14) (5-8) (1.5-4) (15-40) S/A- Sleeping Across the Lifespan Infants need most, elders the least, and REM drops through infancy and stays fairly constant after that. Sleep Myths Everyone needs 8 hrs We are able to learn complicated subjects Dreams only last for a few seconds Some people never dream Genital arousal during sleep reflects Sleep Needs among Animals Evolutionary theory: we evolved to sleep so as to conserve energy when we were least efficient Predicts that species will sleep different amounts depending on how much they must look for food and watch for predator Theories about why we sleep  Adaptive theory animals and humans have evolved sleep patterns to avoid predators by sleeping when predators are most active (AKA Preservation and protection theory)  Restorative Theory: Theory of sleep proposing that sleep is necessary to the physical health of the body and serves to replenish chemicals and repair cellular damage o However, no evidence that how much we sleep depends on how much we worked during the previous day. Sleep Deprivation and the Need  Sleep is linked to good health  Short-term deprivation slows immune system, has possible link with diabetes, obesity and other life-threatening medical conditions  High death rates associated with extreme deprivations  If sleep is missed, a debt is created  Lost sleep changes behaviour, making us: o Irritable o Fatigued o Inattentive and inefficient o Fall asleep faster, sleep longer the next day o Lacking in alertness o Suffere memory problems o Lack of motivation o Depression o Increased accidents Extreme Sleep Deprivation  Studies of ESD, esp in REM, have shown that at about 120 hours of sleep deprivation indiv, will begin to behave in ways indistinguishable from paranoid schizophrenics A new yor
