Document Summary

Psyc101 - lecture #4 - scientific method+types of studies. Test hypothesis (record observations, measurements, analyze data) Revise theory or revise hypothesis and try again) Repeat essence of other research studies to see whether basic findings generalizes to other subjects/circumstances. Usually with different subjects and different situations. Ensures that mistakes in research gets corrected. All the cases for the group from which the sample can be drawn. Each member of the population has an equal chance of inclusion. Ie. if looking to study females- taking only females from a first year psychology class would not be a good sample (too narrow) Representative sampling- usually not true population, need to specify any constraints on the sample in research paper. Usually common when someone has weird diseases. Small number of individuals in great depth. Lot of people but in little depth. Advantages: easy to administer, works pretty well when scientifically sound, when participants are aware/have access to inner thoughts/can accurately report their thoughts.
