Sleep: altered consciousness: in animals, sleep is a naturally recurring state characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity and inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli: should be getting 8-9 hours of sleep (0-2 not sleep deprived) 3 standard psychophysiological measures of sleep: eeg electroencephalogram. Symmated post-synaptic currents: eog electrooculogram. Measures eye movements: emg electromyogram. A goodnight"s sleep cycle: cycle from initial stage. 1 to stage 4 and then backwards through the stages to emergent stage 1: each cycle lasts 90 minutes. Inattentional blindness is defined as: failure to perceive an object when attention is diverted elsewhere (gorilla example) Rapid eye movement sleep: first noticed by aristotle, first scientifically studied by nathanial klietman (1953)
